Start with blinking, breaks, comfortable screen distance, and an up-to-date prescription.
What is happening?
Long stretches of close work can make your eyes feel tired. People often blink less while concentrating on a screen, so the tear film can dry out between blinks. Temporary blur, watering, headache, and a gritty feeling can follow. These symptoms do not prove that a screen has damaged the eye.
Glare, a screen that is too bright for the room, tiny text, and an uncorrected prescription can add to the workload. Contact lenses may make dryness more noticeable.
Make the setup easier on your eyes
Take regular distance breaks, blink deliberately, enlarge text, and position the display roughly at arm’s length with your gaze slightly downward. Reduce reflections and make screen brightness comfortable for the room. If dryness persists, ask an eye-care professional whether artificial tears are appropriate.
A recurring headache or persistent blur deserves an eye exam. A browser vision screen can help you notice a change, but it cannot identify its cause.
Common questions
Can a screen permanently damage my eyes?
Ordinary screen use is not known to permanently damage the eye, but it can cause temporary discomfort. The distinction matters: persistent blur, pain, or a new change should still be assessed because another condition may be present.
Should I change my glasses for computer work?
Possibly. If your current correction makes the screen distance uncomfortable, an eye-care professional can check whether a different prescription or a dedicated computer pair would help. Do not infer a new prescription from an online acuity score.
For persistent changes or symptoms, arrange an eye examination. Seek urgent medical care for sudden vision loss, a new curtain or shadow, many new floaters with flashes, severe eye pain, an eye injury, or sudden double vision.
